The Rules of Link Building

In 2020 links are still one of the most significant factors to rise the ranks to the top of search-engine results. However, some link builders and SEO specialists still use primitive techniques, which do more harm than good. 

Follow these top 6 rules and the results of link building will come quickly:

  • use anchor links and non-anchor links;
  • introduce an anchor-list;
  • a new link from a new donor;
  • use regional and thematic resources;
  • high level of trust a website has and its overall quality;
  • gradual link mass increasing.


Anchor Links and Non-Anchor Links 

Entry-level link-builders feel like adding a large number of anchor links without using any non-anchor links. This is a big mistake which can lead to low ranking of promoted pages or they might even disappear from the SERP.

There are different recommendations on the right proportion of anchor links and non-anchor links. Ideally, one anchor link should be used with 3 non-anchor links. Practically, it’s fine to use 60% of anchor links and 40% of non-anchor links. 

If you don’t believe that non-anchor links work, you just don’t know how to use them properly forgetting about anchor text.

Introducing the Anchor List

Just with the first link you receive, you should create an anchor list where you will note down all the donors, their links, anchor links or non-anchor links. Take the effort to create an Excel or Word document and keep records regularly. 

This work is necessary to make the link building as natural as possible, which primarily lies in unique anchors. 

If you don’t keep record of your anchor links, you might buy a lot of links with the same anchor, which will lead a page or the whole site to be filtered. 

A New Link Means a New Donor

Loads of links from the same website don’t give any result. It’s no longer possible to manipulate it. Every new link you receive must be from a different site. End of story.

Using Regional and Thematic Resources

Links will be useful to the fullest if they are placed on regional and thematic resources. 

If we promote a Ukrainian website selling TV sets, the significant number of referring domains must be in such domain zones as ua,, etc.

The website subject of such donors must be as close to the subject of a promoted page as possible. 

If you can’t find any decent resources to meet the criteria, use general topic resources or news portals with such domain names as com, org, biz, info etc.

High Level of Trust a Website Has and Its Overall Quality

Forget about receiving links from low-trust sites packed with spam which have low visitation level or load slowly. No matter how much this link costs, it will do no good.

You can visually evaluate the quality of a donor website together with using an online service CheckTrust. You shouldn’t believe link building services, if you use them, as they might overrate the quality of donors.  

Gradual Link Mass Increasing

It doesn’t take an expert to see what an increasing dynamics is. This characteristic is of high importance when building link mass. The process of receiving links must be gradual, any spikes or plunges will lead to mistrust of search engines resulting in low ranking or even banning.
